Company description::
When Krissy Brady launched her online writer's trade publication in May 2003, she didn't expect it to expand as quickly as it has.
"I originally wanted to start this website as a hobby, so that I could familiarize myself with the writing industry," explains Krissy. "As I learned and experienced more through my writing, I began putting the website together to share my knowledge of the industry with others who were in the same position as I was. I just didn't realize how many writers actually were."
When Krissy graduated from high school in 2002, she knew she wanted to be a writer, but had no idea where to begin, and where exactly her writing would take her. "I was just like anybody else starting out on a new career path," she explains. "I was enthusiastic, motivated, and ready to take on the world. I have always enjoyed writing, and will always work towards making it a full-time career."
After sending out her first few query letters, she noticed just how impersonal the industry can be. "There is such a lack of emotion in the business side of writing, which to me is so hypocritical. In any arts-related area, you are not just selling your work and your talent, you are selling yourself. You are connected to every word that you put down on paper. Writing is emotional, selling it should be too."
When the first issue of Brady Magazine launched, Krissy made her mission very clear: I want to break down the barrier that is between Editor and Writer... [this] is not an easy career path; that is why we should be given as much help as possible... I don't want to be a starving artist, but I want to be hungry enough to keep writing and to keep marketing my work.
"It's a tough industry," says Krissy, "Why work in it alone?"
Brady Magazine is an online writer's trade magazine dedicated to putting writers on the map. Its bi-monthly issue contains articles written by novice and professional freelance writers, writing advice columns, success stories, writing tips, writing website reviews, and there is also a section that showcases Canadian authors ("Even though the website is for writers internationally, I love showing off Canadian talent," Krissy grins.). Aside from the magazine, the website offers many services to writers, such as classes, critiques, editing, marketing, and web hosting and design services. Brady Magazine's website also contains an extensive market directory, and a directory of writing workshops from around the world. There are plenty of message boards to interact on, and there is a search engine specifically created for writing-related websites.
"It's one thing to preach advice to writers on how to become successful in their chosen field," explains Krissy, "It's another to take that extra step to personally help them improve and promote their work."
Many new features will be added to the website regularly, to keep things fresh, and to make sure all writers find what they are looking for. "My goal is to have the website become the "eBay" of the writing industry," says Krissy.
